We have had a very successful start to the Autumn term and the children have settled in well to their new classes; getting to know their new teachers, class mates and Year 2 routines.
We were fortunate to have the most glorious weather for our school trip to Painshill Park. The children loved building dens and seeing if their dens were waterproof enough to withstand a bucket of water being tipped over them! They also loved going on a treasure hunt around the park; especially exploring the grotto with real Amethyst crystals inside. However, the highlight was finding the treasure of bouncy balls at the end of the trail!
We have particularly enjoyed exploring our Power of Reading text and the varied learning opportunities that we have planned to support this. This has included creating and performing poetry as a group and collecting Autumn leaves to create our Autumn art display.
We are looking forward to the space dome (mini planetarium) arriving just before half term to launch our focus on Space for the second half of term.
Amethyst have had a very busy and exciting half term. The children have loved exploring and learning all about our new topic of Space. We have used two books from our new reading programme, The Power of Reading, to help us explore this fascinating topic. We loved reading ‘Bob, The Man on the Moon’ and hearing all about how he keeps the moon clean and tidy for space tourists to visit. We then wrote all about a day in the life of Bob and described the aliens we would meet! After we read ‘The long Way Back Home’ the children were able to use their creativity to make their own space rocket and imagination to write their own story set in space. In particular, we have been focussing on using noun phrases (e.g. red, shiny rocket) to add interest to our writing. In history and science, we have been learning all about the different famous astronauts and how real astronauts survive in space.
In maths we have covered a wide range of subjects, but in particular we have been developing children’s independence to use resources such as dienes or their own drawings to help solve addition and subtraction problems. We have also practised using our knowledge of number bonds to 20 (18+2 = 20) to help us solve mental maths problems.
Outside the classroom, the children had a very exciting and loud session with a musician who ran a junk percussion workshop. The children got the chance to try out several different types of instrument and make a lot of noise or should I say music!
Finally, we finished the term off with a fantastic performance by the whole of Year 2, singing and acting in a production of Christmas around the World. It was lovely to see the children thoroughly enjoying themselves as they sang and acted their hearts out, in front of their friends and families.
We wish you all a Merry Christmas and look forward to seeing you all in the New Year.
