Key Stage 1 The learning journey for 5-7 year olds (Years 1 and 2)

Our staff team have developed a curriculum which ensures a smooth transition from our Early Years Foundation Stage into Key Stage 1. Appropriate activities which build on our children’s knowledge and understanding are taught with a higher level of challenge and skill. If you would like more information about our curriculum please ask your child’s class teacher or email the school.

Phonics and Reading

At Hampton Wick Infant and Nursery School systematic synthetic phonics is taught through Letters and Sounds.  Children are taught phonics in their class groups with their class teachers and may also complete phonics activities in small groups.  Phonics is a key part in children learning to read and children are encouraged to use their sounds as a first strategy.  We do not use a formal scheme for reading, but a rich mixture of “real” books as well as phonetically decodable books from publishers such as Collins.
